Community health volunteers have achievements in the field of health awareness and each has a story that tells her success and brilliance and an experience that benefited her and the beneficiary groups. On the other hand , there are volunteers , despite their suffering while performing their duties in spreading health awareness , but they are more steadfast, sacrificing, and bearing the labor difficulties and psychological burdens of their own live.
Here is the story of a community health volunteers of the Health and Nutrition Project of Yemen Health Organization funded by UNICIF, which showed patience and faith in God against breast cancer, which only gave her more determination to continue in educating the people in her village.
Samira ……. From Al- Sarrah sub-district, in Al- Aodin Distract, IBB Governorate. It has a population of approximately 120 families. Samira is a divorced woman, who is an 8-year-old girl's mother. She belongs to a 12-member-family and has completed her secondary education only.
As for her reason to volunteer for the health and educational work Samira said:” Due to my cancer, I promised myself that I would do my best to educate mothers to prevent this malignant disease. And, to raise the awareness of the importance of breastfeeding so that they do not get the same disease.”
Samira's disease began in the last Shawwal when she had a diagnosis operation in IBB province. After the result of the cultural examination, she performed mastectomy in the capital Sana'a and then began suffering from the chemotherapy stage after being transferred to Al- Thawra hospital in IBB.
Samira was able to get over the breast cancer, and continued to educate her village. She has done many awareness initiatives, lectures and sessions for many housewives in the fields of "breastfeeding, breast cancer, open deification and exposed sewerage, personal hygiene and hand washing with water and soap, and preventing malnutrition. The villagers always encourage and support her, knowing that she is seeking the best for them and their health. The villagers began to dig sewerage holes and set up garbage disposal sore.
This terrifying disease did not prevent Samira from continuing her journey, but increased her determination to exert, and give her a life-long goal to not see the pain on the mother's faces again. She has a great ambition that is growing day after day facing the great challenge of fighting this painful disease.
The story of Samira's suffering with the pain got her village people's concern who showed more empathy comforting, supporting, and listening to her guidance. They were proud of her as an example of the rural mother who stood up to that deadly pain " Breast Cancer ".
